Problem: Graduate students in Georgia Tech often try and get an assistantship positions on campus. Such positions waive of the tuition fees and also provide a monthly stipend, making these positions highly coveted and sought after. However, no formalized system exists in Gatech for grad students to apply for these roles. Hence grad students often rely on tedious and ardous task of bulk cold mailing to professors to try and get a position.
Solution: We designed an app for Georgia Tech graduate students, where they can see all available jobs at one place, apply to these jobs with ease, and even get training for the job they are interersted in applying for.
Timeline: 4 Months
My Role: I was involved in the user research, design of the app, and managing the functioning of the team. I also worked on the evaluation of the final product.
In our research, we interviewed several students and conducted online surveys to understand the problems being faced by graduate students with assistanship positions, identifying their needs . We wanted answers to questions such as:
We interviewed ten graduate students at Georgia Tech. These were 30-45 min interviews, in which we tried to understand the user pain points. Students were also asked to demonstrate their GRA/GTA hunt using any artifact that they are comfortable with. Based on the interviews, we did Affinity Mapping to get
We conducted online surveys which helped us gather a general idea about the graduate assistanship process for graudate students. It also gave us cues about the problems the students were facing and helped us formulate the questions for the contextual inquiries. We got responses from 51 students. The responses are vizualized below.
